How to break the elopement to your friends and family
How to break the elopement to your friends and family
Let me guess, if you're reading this, you might be considering eloping with your partner. It's a wonderful way to celebrate your love intimately and meaningfully. However, telling your family and friends about your decision can be a tricky subject to broach.
Most of my clients found breaking the news about their elopement arrangements delicate. That’s why I feel like I need to share some tips regarding telling your family you are eloping.
Be upfront and honest
Let loved ones know you value their opinions, but you and your partner both feel eloping is the best choice. Emphasize it's not about excluding them but rather about celebrating your love in a way that feels authentic to you as a couple. It's hard but fair to be straightforward when telling your family you are eloping.
Share your reasons
If your loved ones have difficulty understanding why you chose to elope, explain your reasoning. Maybe you want an intimate ceremony or to skip the stress and expense of planning a big wedding. Whatever your reasons, sharing them can help your family and friends see your perspective.
Consider a follow-up celebration
A small reception after your eloping can smooth the differences in opinions with some of your family or friends. In this way, you can also celebrate your love with them but as part of a smaller event. Such compromise will allow you the intimate elopement you want while still letting family and friends celebrate.
Document your big day with black and white elopement photography
One of the great things about eloping is that it allows you to focus on what's truly important – your love and commitment to each other. Hire a photographer to capture your day in a documentary style wedding shoot. Moreover, black and white photography can be a beautiful and timeless way to immortalize your eloping memories.
